Based in Ohio, Mike Garcar represents for-profit companies and tax-exempt organizations in a wide variety of corporate and compliance matters. His representative work on behalf of for-profit companies includes advising the company and board of directions on corporate compliance and governance matters, including the establishment of appropriate policies and procedures and compliance with corporate formalities. His representative work on behalf of tax-exempt organizations, such as 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations, and 501(c)(6) trade associations, includes all aspects of corporate and tax matters. For example, he assists with nonprofit formations, governance issues, drafting vendor and consulting agreements, applying for federal and state tax-exempt recognition, advising on the IRS rules governing lobbying and political activities, and preparing and reviewing required tax disclosures, notices, and filings.

Before joining The Gober Group, Mike worked at a boutique law firm where his practice consisted of advising nonprofits and public entities. In that role, he served as outside general counsel to clients and assisted with a wide range of corporate matters, including contracts, leases, non-profit structuring, facility usage, property tax exemption, employment matters, corporate governance, and a wide range of compliance issues. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mike oversaw all public policy, communications, and fundraising operations for one of Ohio’s largest addiction treatment and mental health providers. From this experience, he greatly appreciates the daily demands and real-world issues facing his nonprofit clients.

Mike graduated cum laude from the University of Akron School of Law and received his undergraduate degrees from Walsh University, where he was a scholarship football player and vice president of student government. He volunteers his time working with various charitable organizations, including his local church, the ALS Association, and serving as a Guardian ad Litem representing children in abuse, neglect, and dependency cases. Mike is a proud husband and father, avid runner, and lover of Ohio State football and Cleveland sports.
